Dr. Dragomir Dardanov is a surgeon with professional interests in abdominal and general surgery, surgical oncology, coloproctology, and clinical anatomy.
Education and Qualifications
He graduated in Medicine in 2002 from the Medical University of Pleven, Bulgaria. He obtained his specialization in Surgery in 2008, the same year he defended his PhD thesis on the surgical treatment of rectal cancer.
In 2015, he completed a second specialization in Anatomy, Histology, and Cytology. He holds European Board certifications in Surgical Oncology (2012) and Coloproctology (2015), as well as a certificate in abdominal ultrasonography (2013). Since 2021, he has been a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS).
Clinical and International Experience
Dr. Dardanov has trained and worked in leading medical institutions in Bulgaria and internationally, including Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (New York), The Methodist Hospital (Houston), St. Mark’s Hospital (London), St. Vincent’s Hospital (Dublin), Danube Hospital (Vienna), and Tokyo Medical and Dental University.
He has participated in numerous advanced training courses in surgery, including laparoscopic and robotic techniques, as well as oncology programs across Europe and Asia.
Since 2014, he has been part of the team at the Clinic of General and Hepato-Pancreatic Surgery at Aleksandrovska University Hospital in Sofia. From 2022 to 2023, he served as Head of the Department of Gastrointestinal, Hepatobiliary, and Pancreatic Surgery.
Professional Expertise
His clinical expertise includes abdominal surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery, colorectal surgery, laparoscopic procedures, breast and thyroid surgery, hernia repair, and oncological surgery. He is also experienced in procedures such as lymph node dissections, treatment of hidradenitis suppurativa, and placement of chemotherapy ports.
Professional Memberships and Leadership
Dr. Dardanov is a member of numerous national and international professional organizations, including the Bulgarian Surgical Society, Bulgarian Anatomical Society, Union of Scientists in Bulgaria, European Society of Coloproctology (ESCP), European Society of Surgical Oncology (ESSO), European Digestive Surgery (EDS), European Hernia Society (EHS), Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland (ACPGBI), and the American Association of Clinical Anatomists (AACA).
He served as National Representative for Bulgaria in ESCP (2013–2016), Regional Representative for Eastern Europe (2017–2019), and has been a member of the ESCP Scientific Committee since 2020. In 2019, he co-founded the Bulgarian Society of Coloproctology and has served as its President since its establishment.
Academic and Scientific Activity
Dr. Dardanov has an active academic and research career. Since 2014, he has been teaching general and operative surgery at the Medical University of Sofia. He has also taught anatomy and medical sciences at multiple institutions, including the Medical University of Pleven and Sofia University.
He participates in international research projects, presents at national and international scientific meetings, and has published extensively in both Bulgarian and international journals. He has also contributed to books and monographs in the field of surgery and anatomy.
